Lament For A Wellingtonia (Sequoiadendron Giganteum) Poem by Royston Nella

Lament For A Wellingtonia (Sequoiadendron Giganteum)

What's this I hear, a lethal chainsaw's roar?
This means that I shall grace this place no more.
I would like to say farewell to my friends
now that my long sojourn in Tilehurst ends.

I'll be replaced by a new tree today
as to a younger sapling I make way.
May it grow, tall like me in future days
causing the people's eyes to heaven gaze.

And will some carpenter take part of me
and fashion out a cross for all to see.
Then place it on a sill in the Church hall
close to the greatest Carpenter of all.
