Kumbh Mela, A Myth Poem by Rm. Shanmugam Chettiar

Kumbh Mela, A Myth

Devas (gods) and Asuras (Demons) churned the Milk Sea
To obtain the amirth (the elixir) and got it at last.
It came out of the sea in a pitcher (Kumbh)
To be snatched away by the agents of Vishnu
Lest the Asuras should drink it and thus get
Immunity and immortality.

When it was carried away, it had spilled
In four places where the rivers namely
The Ganges in Haridwar, the Yamuna
Merging with the Ganges in Prayagraj,
The Kshipra in Ujjayini and the Gothavari
In Nastic, flow, receiving the spilled drops.

To take a dip in these rivers of those places
In the relative position of the Jupiter
The Sun and the Moon, will wash away
One's sin and accrue Punya, the credit.
It takes twelve years, the Jupiter's revolving time.
God was a party to cheat the Asuras.

People believe these as they do Adam and Eve.
