This is a tough poem. It tells the bitter truth without any sugar-coating of the facts. An alcoholic is living a life of slow suicide. Only he can save himself ultimately but the odds are against him. In one of Jack Nicholson's films an Indian man tells him, That liquor bottle just sucked up my daddy's soul.
Daniel, it was a tough write. He was one of several literary geniuses who drank himself to death. Interestingly enough, he had an exceptional memory. Thanks for the Nicholson reference. Which movie?
