Just As If. Poem by Terry Collett

Just As If.

Just as if
nothing had happened
and the world
had stopped spinning.

Just as if
her body wasn't
next to mine
like warmth
had disappeared
and angels didn't
stand on the end
of a needle.

Just as if
sin had never been
and the wars
had not taken place
and there was always
plenty and no homeless
or starving or abused.

Just as if
I had not looked
into her eyes
and seen paradise
or smelt the flowers
in her hair
or felt the edge
of space in her touch.

Just as if
no one lied
or hurt or deceived
where there was love
and no one grieved
or felt the loss of love
or another's soul.

Just as if
I never kissed her lips
or sensed eternity
in her touch
or saw forever
in her eyes
and no one dies.

Just as if
I never slept or woke
or was silent or spoke
or lay down or stood up
or made love.

Just as if
nothing happened
or would or did
if I hadn't
been born
it would been
as if.
