Jayadeva's Geeta Govinda - A Love Song So Passionate Poem by Geeta Radhakrishna Menon

Jayadeva's Geeta Govinda - A Love Song So Passionate

Rating: 5.0

Geeta Govinda-the gospel of Jayadeva
The soft soothing words unparalleled,
The sweet melodies so passionate,
And love so intense and poignant.

Padmavati, Jayadeva's beloved wife
Danced with blissful abandon
So immersed in her dearest husband's
Lyrical music of unrestrained joy!

Together, they wandered far and wide,
Sang and danced the fervent song of
Ashtapadi -the immortal love song of
Radha and Krishna, the eternal lovers!

Whether Radha and Krishna
Or Padmävati and Jayadeva
So well matched, so attached!
Like two mountain streams, ardent and rapturous,
Meeting and flowing into the valley of profound love.
Could it be a reincarnation then?
That the souls merged and embraced,
With emotions and feelings so blissfully divine.

The folks of those bygone days and centuries,
Wondered at such depth and melody,
That they sang and sang, over and over again,
The Geeta Govinda!
That to this century, the folk shed tears of happiness,
Rejuvenated, with their love so pure!
Today, Geeta bathed in love and devotion for her Radhakrishna,
Reminisces, the undying passion of the yore!

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
Jayadeva is a 12th century poet whose love poem 'Geeta Govinda' composed in Sanskrit became a favourite with singers, dancers and painters in India. It is a beautiful poem on the eternal lovers Radha and Krishna. In Kerala, the Geeta Govinda became popular as Ashtapadis.
As an artiste it has been a great joy for me to sing and dance the Ashtapadis. I have also translated the 24 Ashtapadis into English as a dedication to my mother who loved the Ashtapadis.
COMMENTS OF THE POEM

It's a beautiful tribute to poet Jayadeva, a devotional attempt to highlight Geetha Govindam and an ecstatic attitude to the eternal love between Lord Krishna and Radha. Thank you Greta Menon

Love of Radha and Krishna has so much influenced the common culture of the area that we use so many words in our poetry without knowing that we are referring to Radha and Krishna, e.g. Sanwariya that means Krishna. It's a wonderful gratitude To Jaydeva.
