This poem strikes me as one of increasing darkness, the darkness of mortality. It's not about evil and sin. It's about the mortality which hedges our bright shining humanity. You are confronting the facts of death and dying with an unflinching resolution to see the truth boldly and without false consolation. You find the whiteness of bones darkens because of their association with death, you observe shadows, then day disappears into night and everything is dark. This could be a very depressing poem but your resolution to see the truth of mortality is so fiercely truthful, I feel no depression, only relief that such courage takes us to the very heart of things.
