Over time, 'an eke-name'
became 'a nickname'
because it's easier to say.

'Eke' means 'extend',
therefore so too does 'nick',
which means many other things too.

It's the space below the inner base
of a beer tankard, that makes the tankard
look more capacious than it is.

A tankard with a nick
is a fake, is a trick.

'Nick' does not, I regret,
mean 'idiosyncracy' or 'pet'.
