O! Glowing Firefly! Light my path with your fluorescence, Let each step of mine cheer with incandescence, In a world of darkness, even a firefly can shed a little light! The firefly in your picture is different from what I saw as a boy. Our fireflies in Ohio had opaque outer wings of black chitin, with membranous inner wings. The last three segments of the abdomen were a pale yellow " lamp" . The lamps flashed, near and far, as the " lightning bugs" flew about. When a lightning bug rested in the grass, its glow illuminated a few neighboring grassblades.

The firefly's glow takes us to the threshold of vision, where we find mystery. Such wondrous creatures remind us of the creative spark that underlies natural forms. Encountering a firefly can be an occasion for spontaneous prayer.
