This is indeed a matter of great pleasure to see an inquisitive soul or a true lover of nature exploring its small wonders which we otherwise care about. To read and to know about glow worms which emits its tiny charming light at night is an awesome experience. Thanks for the poem as well as the Poet's Notes on the subject.

The firefly in your picture is different from what I saw as a boy. Our fireflies in Ohio had opaque outer wings of black chitin, with membranous inner wings. The last three segments of the abdomen were a pale yellow " lamp" . The lamps flashed, near and far, as the " lightning bugs" flew about. When a lightning bug rested in the grass, its glow illuminated a few neighboring grassblades.

The firefly's glow takes us to the threshold of vision, where we find mystery. Such wondrous creatures remind us of the creative spark that underlies natural forms. Encountering a firefly can be an occasion for spontaneous prayer.
