2) May Dr. Daniel rest in peace. Thank you so much Poem Hunter and Team to have chosen Dannie Abse´s poem as The Modern Poem Of The Day. Men, even doctors are human and have deep emotions either. Dannie Abse showed in this poem how very painful such a moment is, especially when a dedicated medical doctor failed to help. I will read this beautiful saddest poem time and again. A very touching poem, superbly written.
Dannie Abse as poet better known as a dedicated medical doctor created this superb poem about a patient who is going to die. I have in my life known so many doctors and we can read here how very sad and tragic this is, the moment that a dedicated doctor failed to help, the tragedy I can feel, the deep sadness the doctot felt at that moment. CONGRATULATIONS to the family Abse in the UK for this prize of honour.
A beautiful work of art. Well conceived and elegantly brought forth with insight. Thanks for sharing.
Haunting imagery that is amplified by the gramophone, " Leave...my...soul...alone." An excellent write on hospitals, and their nurses and doctors where saving a live is trumpeted. Thanks for posting this Dannie Abse poem. : -)
Very interesting poem indeed.Enjoyed the concept and flow.10++++
Very dramatic poem where so many questions arise. Drama ceases but impressions last long. Wonderful read.
The telling rhymes in the first three stanzas are abandoned in the last, as the huge battle to save a life fails. The attempt to save the soul then, 'to cease at last when something other died.' The thoughtful quest to know what constitutes life its self, by the poet who was also a dedicated medical doctor..
its beautiful poem - home alone, sound around, scream bounds to be crowned! /// all interesting
POEMHUNTER - It's insulting to the author, and bad editorial practice, to reproduce a poem without the notes the author published with it. And this poem has an important explanatory title note. I'm sure, if Dannie Abse was alive, he'd be deeply upset to find has been omitted here.
SHOCKING POEMHUNTER! This poem is without its title note and quote! It's important: the quote comes from his father, a doctor & surgeon (as was DA) and allows the reader to understand the full horror and historical setting, as well as the poems', and author's, humanity. Please include it PoemHunter!
A rare subject to touch. Clinical accounts are vividly presented. Excellent write.
Superbly penned. Surgery gone wrong and his time runs out... Congratulations on Poem of the Day, Dannie. Truly well deserved.
A chill runs through the spine as you read the poem of sickness, hospitals, doctors and nurses. How the body leaves the soul is a painful experience, so well portrayed through this poignant poem. Congratulations Dannie.
Beautifully penned. Thanks for sharing. Leave my soul alone, leave my soul alone, ' that voice so arctic and that cry so odd had nowhere else to go—till the antique gramophone wound down and the words began 10 for it.
Matched the silence under snow! Thanks for sharing this poem with us.
A wonderful read with depth and imagery.
