In The Space Between Poem by Grant House

In The Space Between

It is said that God lives in the space between the letters of the Torah
A document written with no vowels
The meaning of each word and phrase
Breathed into us by intonation and intent
Received through the context of our listening

The great spirit animating the cosmos also lives in the space between lovers' lips just before they kiss
And just after
The kiss itself
Divine self-knowing
The moment
The source of all that is
Meets itself
And feels at home

Leave your eyes open when you kiss
Or close them
God sees you for who you are

One

A kiss
A kindness
A knowing glance
A wish
Fingers barely touching
The earnest handshake
Food that fills your dish
Caretaker brushes her hair
Nurse adjusts his pillow
Dear friend says look and see
This golden evening's river edge
Dipping gently in the water
Softly sighing weeping willow
Moments of connection
Like a stranger's prayer
Remind us
Wherever We Are
I Am One is always there
