In The Mirror Poem by Mystic Qalandar

In The Mirror

Do you yearn
to see yourself in the mirror—
without first wiping the glass clean?
Do you seek freedom,
without cutting the girdle from your waist?

'Whoever knows himself, knows his Lord.'
You long for the Lord—
yet remain a stranger to your essence.
And still, it is you
who bears the perfect imprint
of 'I breathed into him of My Spirit.'

You wish to be a knower of truths,
yet wander lost in the fog of ignorance.
You proclaim servitude—
yet fail to grasp
that true gnosis
is but another name
for the humility of unknowing.

Can you taste sweetness
by wandering orchards
and only gazing at grapes?
Can you expect a pear
to grow from the trunk of a willow?

With ant-like steps,
do you seek the gaze of angels?
If the water doesn't touch your heels,
will you still call it an ocean?
Without crossing the stream,
can you ever reach the boundless sea?

In the shell of a walnut
is hidden the light—
O surface-seer!
When will your inner eye awaken?

O jurist!
You've memorized the rituals by tongue,
but how will the doors of meaning open
if you haven't grasped the heart of the Qur'an?

O MyKoul!
By mumbling borrowed words in your sleep,
do you hope to attain divine knowledge?

You may be a seeker,
but the arrows of mystery
cannot be loosed with empty hands.

Without tasting the flavor
of the Unity of Being—
how can you cry out
for the realm of Hahut?
