Edmund, this is dark fantasy that starts out so sunshine-happy in the little how town....though that 103 life span put a jar and a jolt in the first stanza..... I feel so sad for the Poppie people- -they live in what we would think are ideal conditions for society- -no evil or crime running rampant in the streets but without the tenderness and the passion of love it would indeed be a flat-line existence. Great piece of writing, Edmund. 10's all over this poem and its writer.
I really enjoyed this, love the way you you've created a world of fantasy in just two verses with underlying messages of reality. I would be honored if you checked out a few of my poems.
The Poppie people dwell in the land of Elm. The couples wed for life and life carried love. An amazing and thoughtful poem is shared here...10
Somehow it seems that we need imperfection to realize how to love...........
It brings to mind the white picket fence where the most important thing is image and appearance and behind the facade a dead empty life. How tragic. Thoreau words come to mind 'most men live lives of quiet desperation'. Splendid poem Edmund it makes me grateful for the raw messiness and unpredictability of life.
