In His Image Poem by Joe Fraccalvieri

In His Image

And a spirit moved across the face of the earth
becoming flesh…. And blood… And bone
Though we don't know the details concerning his birth
the tale of this man is well known

He lived in Eden… Naked… Alone
but always under God's watchful eye

It was God who created the man from the dust
among the earth and the stars in the sky

And God placed a tree in the midst of the Garden
and commanded the man,
"Upon my Word you will need to rely…
You may freely eat of all that has grown--
that which you harvest-- from all that is sown…
For I am your God and I do not lie…
But of this one tree, if eaten… Believe me, I say…
In that day-- you will certainly die."

And God put the man in the land to the east
He gave names to all cattle, to each bird, every beast
And of every living creature… Whatever he would call,
including every creeping thing that could slither and crawl…
From the greatest of them to the very least,
he named the large and the small, the short and the tall…
He gave names to them all and his work never ceased

But God said, "It is not good that the man should be alone"
So God put the man in a very deep sleep
and removed from his body a bone
And to show what you sow you shall also reap,
a woman from the man, God did hone for Adam to keep

The tree became pleasing to the woman's eyes
and she was teased by the Serpent
who said to eat from the tree would make one wise

And the woman did eat of the tree
and shared what she did with the man
And though their eyes were now open
the Serpent could not see
that this was all part of God's plan

And such was the covenant between God and Man…
The Woman… The Serpent… And the Tree
Their story lives on, in the eons they span

And the rest, as they say, is Hist'ry
