You still believe in this poem and well you should because it expresses a key idea: Change your thinking and you change your world. Psychologists call this COGNITIVE THERAPY, that is, it's focused on changing thinking patterns, rather changing emotional states. Who can really change the mood they're in? Or change someone else's mood? Emotions are sticky, you can't brush them off, they resist such efforts. But the mind is so nimble, and fleet, and free. And that's how I read your repeated advice for the world to smile. The smile represents the power of the mind to take charge, to create a new reality, to smother bad emotions in liberating thoughts. If I were still a teacher, I'd pass out copies of this poem on the first day of class, and announce, OK here's how we are going to make the most of our time together - it's right here in this poem - Who will read first?
