If Only #1 Poem by arundhati sinha

If Only #1

'I regret the us that didn't happen.'

The version of myself I would have been,
When we would spar, when we would laugh,
When he would make me feel seen
And fill up the empty half.

The version that he might have been.
With me, because of me
And all mine.

These versions we may never know.
They were the price we had to pay
To allow for room to grow
Into the versions we are today.

And yet, a wistful longing remains
A faint whisper stirs from deep within
If only I had let love take the reins
Could we have made it through thick and thin?
