I Was There Poem by Marlene Rashidi

I Was There

I witnessed him being mocked
With my own naked eyes,
I seen the blood of the Messiah dripping in agony
They clothed him with purple garment
as they platted a thorny crown upon his head
I seen the pain in his eyes
When they spat on him
I was there
Standing right next to Mary the mother of James
I was there
as they smote his head with a reed
And when others began to worship him
I was there
Looking from afar
Those who believed in him
screamed Praise him, the King of the Jews,
the father of the fatherless
and others screamed Crucify him, the King of the Jews
They dragged the Son of God on that dusty uphill city
of skulls called Golgotha
There I was
watching God’s only begotten son suffer for the sins of men,
for the sins of the flesh, Messiah was slayed
I was there
as they took off the purple clothing from him and clothed
him with his own clothes and journeyed him to Crucifixion
He carried his cross and my burdens
As they nailed him to that cross
He spoke and said, “father forgive them, for they know not what they are doing.”
I was there
I seen him
I am Mary Magdalene.
