I Saw Them Poem by Kenneth Maswabi

I Saw Them

Women and children of Ukraine
Carrying sorrow in their faces
Their hearts numb from the horrors of war
They were not afraid to show their humanity
Together, they were stronger than the military brigades and grenades that attacked their homes
They carried more than hope in their hearts
They carried the future of their country in their hands
Their future seemed uncertain but they were certainly determined to live
They were not afraid to seek refuge in foreign lands
Because it was important for them to survive this ordeal
It was of utmost importance to hold tight to their sanity
And not let the warmongers bury them in the rubble of their madness
They did not invite this horrible nightmare
They were not partakers in the manufacturing of this madness
They are the innocent victims of terror
But they are also the beloved of God
They will find their way to peace, happiness and Love
Certainly not today or tomorrow
