I Put A Penny Down Poem by Juan Olivarez

I put a penny down,
the man said it ain't enough.
A penny just won't pay,
For all of this here stuff.

So I dug deep inside my pants,
and I pulled a nickle out.
The man said I'm sorry son,
And I began to pout.

Then he put his head upon my head,
And he looked me in the eye.
And he smiled his great big smile at me,
And said no reason son to cry.

Fact is your dad was in the store,
A little while ago.
he was in a rush, and forgot his change,
he just said he had to go.

I owe him a nickle and that's a fact,
So take the licorice sticks.
Then he took his hanky and dried the tears,
That were running down my cheeks.

I never forgot old man Garcia,
And what he did for me that day.
you see when he let me have the licorice sticks,
It had already been two years, since my dad had passed away.
