I Love Dogs: Being A Dog Owner Poem by Paula Glynn

I Love Dogs: Being A Dog Owner

The dog (Canis familiaris or Canis lupus familiaris)
A domesticated descendant of the wolf called the domestic dog
They cleverly selectively bred from an extinct population of wolves
During the Late Pleistocene by hunter-gatherers
The wonderful dog the first species to be domesticated by humans
14,000 years ago and before the development of agriculture
Experts estimate this due to their long association with humans.

Dogs able to thrive on a starch-rich diet and needing meat
Inadequate for other canids generous humans their saviours
Dogs bred for desired behaviours: assisting police and guide dogs
Sensory capabilities, and physical attributes making them stars
Dog breeds vary widely in shape, size, and colour able to travel in cars
They have the same number of bones (with the exception of the tail)
Powerful jaws that house around 42 teeth with the strength of a whale.

Well-developed senses of smell, hearing, and sight and able to fight
Compared to humans, dogs have an inferior visual acuity with might
A superior sense of smell, and a relatively large olfactory cortex
Performing many roles for humans, such as hunting, herding
Pulling loads, protection, companionship, therapy
Aiding disabled people, and assisting police and the military
Communication in dogs includes eye gaze with abilities that amaze,

Facial expression, vocalization, body posture that could cost you
(Including movements of bodies and limbs) not needing to be slim
And gustatory communication (scents, pheromones, and taste)
They have their territories, their instincts not going to waste
When entering a new environment they do explore: nothing they ignore
Over the millennia, dogs became uniquely adapted to human behaviour;
This including being able to understand and communicate with humans.

As such, the human-canine bond has been a topic of frequent study
And dogs' influence on human society has given: people loving their dogs
Dogs the sobriquet of 'man's best friend': a bond that doesn't end
The global dog population estimated at 700 million to 1 billion
The dog the most popular pet in the United States, pets are great
Owners and dogs with a relationship that keeps dogs healthy
Developed countries with approximately 20% of the global dog population,

Around 75% of dogs are estimated to be from developing countries
Mainly in the form of feral and community dogs
Sadly animal neglect even in advanced society owners instead drinking beer
The RSPCA rescuing thousands of dogs every year
Thankfully mostly recovering and finding new owners
Their lives no longer in houses cramped like smog
Now sleeping at night happily by the fire and like a wooden log.
