This is a very nicely written tanka, Jim, perfect in syllable count with some very sly lines as well. Most of us Americans tend to view a tanka as simply an extended haiku or senryu, which, needless to say, upsets our purist friends considerably! To their further consternation, a poet from the Smoky Mountains of North Carolina deveoped a new haiku/senryu format, the 2-3-2 poem, which is not easy to write, to say the least. Carl.
