He must have lived with spirits or ghosts from the past. They show him once living things that are now dust and ashes. An unknown stranger gazes at him, but he is unmoved. The Shades tell him ominously that the stranger resembles himself, but they would not tell him the stranger's name. A good poem, which needs a close reading.
