I Am Not A Child Of My Own Thought Poem by Mohammad Younus

I Am Not A Child Of My Own Thought

I am not a child of my own thought,
I see myself as a dependent being,
for I feel that I am nothing.
God is the be-all and end-all of my being.
I am like grass growing spontaneously
by the absolute command of God,
not of my own accord.

All I need do is submit my will
to the supreme command,
casting myself into a being
burning with the flame of His love.
His presence, though invisible to my eyes,
is felt by my heart, my soul, my mind.
I hear a mysterious calling:
I am the undivided and indivisible being!
You are not cut off from me!

I am His devout servant.
Once a servant, my Lord tells me,
always a servant you must be.
Yet, I cannot always see it in myself,
and for the lost servanthood,
I weep.

God, restore me, please,
to the position of
a loyal, dutiful, and devout servant.
A master can never stoop so low
as to be a servant,
a servant can never elevate himself so high
as to be the master.
