How Strange! Poem by Mohammad Younus

How Strange!

How strange!
You are occupied by cares for this world;
How strange! you ignore your religious duties...
...to your God and his people!
This is the real misfortune and calamity...
...that distracts you from your lord!
Do you not know that fostering the worldly lusts...
...keeps one away from divinity?
For no seeker divine, surely, should show affection...
...for an inveterate foe!
Compared with the Hereafter...
...the life of this world is but a [trifling] enjoyment!
And what is the life of this world...
...other than play and amusement?

This world, O friend, is like an enemy in disguise...
...neither a friend mine nor a friend thine!
You must get rid of this enemy...
shame brings to you!
What a cunning, deceptive and divertive, indeed...
...is this enemy!
Do not be taken in by his seemingly attractive temptations...
...the worldly things of beauty and luxury...,
...are ephemeral without any lasting benefit;
He is in and out man's avowed enemy...
...who always stands in his ambush;
He will roll you down from a mountain peak...
...with a forceful dash;
He will not let you tie the knot with your lord...
...as you had promised to Him in eternity.

This world is like the bridal procession of crows...
...that is temporary and ends with fall of dusk;
This world is a spectacle...
...a mere children's show, as Mirza Galib says
Your worldly goods and your children...
...are but a trial and a temptation...
...whereas with God there is...
...a tremendous reward.[Quran]
