Hippo In A Tutu: On Poetics Poem by Denis Mair

Hippo In A Tutu: On Poetics

Rating: 5.0

My approach to poetry comes from my wish
To set words dancing, even if the dance
Is like hippos wearing tutus in FANTASIA.
Fact-based musings want to join the lyrical mix;
Though I'm not a REAL scientist or philosopher,
I want to be their lyrical crusader, if only I can.
I celebrate those stations on the road of knowledge,
Where scientists and philosophical dreamers
Are busy staking out invisible territories,
Delving into things remote from daily concerns,
Yet such remoteness can tell us something
About the stretched fabric of our culture.
So let my poems be stretched like tulle
Over the hindquarters of a dancing hippo
Such dances proclaim the pride of knowledge
Even when sent by fate to colonize the void.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
I felt that the hippos in Disney's FANTASIA were dancing for me.
