Hinemoa Poem by Dulip Madhasekara (Asheer)

Hinemoa

When the moon meets
The silky white
Steam to greet
In a silent night
Calm and quiet

Sound of a flute
Filled with love
Calling to Pursuit
Across the waters
Through the
Misty, steamy:
Misterious Rotorua

To the heart
Of Tutanekai

Hinemoa
POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
This poem is inspired by the beauty of Rotorua [one of the most elegant places in Aotearoa (New Zealand) ] and the story of Hinemoa and Tutanekai. Tutanekai is a young man who lives on Mōtūruhe Island in Lake Rotorua. He plays a flute to express his love and longing for Hinemoa. Hinemoa, hearing the flute, swims across the lake to meet Tutanekai, and they fall in love.
