Heavy On My Heart Poem by Anisa Tara

Heavy On My Heart

You and I do not exist
We're not there anymore
Not in some distant universe
Not even in myth or folklore

I used to hope against all
That I'd still see us there
A girl in love in your lap
Two people asleep in a chair

Or maybe I'd slow my car
Take a left instead of a right
And see us past the corner
Two criminals under a light

Perhaps on a mountaintop again
You and I have seen a few
Hear lies before such beauty
That I was still the best view

I've counted the odds every hour
But there isn't one in my favour
It weighs heavy on my heart
The contemplations are never over

I've carried the maybes too long
But they've only been nevers
Because we'll never be there again
Not in any lifetime, not ever
