I never thought of it that way before now. Your perspective on the subject is something to admire greatly. Thanks for sharing this great work of yours. Remain enriched.
Hey Jez! ! ! I apologize for taking so long to reply. When I am healthy I am much more prompt. The way I look at it is that you took time to read and comment and that is time you could have spent writing- so I thank you for your fun-loving comment and your obvious enjoyment and the multitude of ten's! ! ! ! You are a blessing on this site!
The beginning lines of this poem are much interesting. It may be cited...... Hmmm...Jack Gilbert says Poetry Is A Kind Of Lying... Okay, okay, I hear all you guys out there sighing but what he's saying tis so very true even if it makes you want to run him through and through. It is a beautiful poem on poetry so nicely executed. I appreciate this poem. Thanks again.
hey! ! thank you for commenting! ! ! I am wriuting this with a patch over my left eye and I can barely see out of blurryt right eye==so it is slow going- I will probably copy and paste thius which I hate doing but I just have to reduce the amouint of time I use my eyes- -I love and respect each of you taking time to read and comment- you guys aree the best! ! !
You are being funny but you have dealt with the subject of poetry intelligently. The language of poetry is often, if not always, flowery, winding, hyperbolic; But there lies the charm!
The voices of poetry- -so myriad and capable of great magic. And you are right- there in lies its charm! ! !
Interesting to hear about lying from Gilbert who had to use a pseudonym for his two novels. And when he wrote poetry about his colourful relationships, how much of it was a lie when he was lying down with his lovers? Did he lie and say: How your eyes mirror your soul! OR Your eyes are such a beautiful green. Susan, your poem is a masterpiece of sarcasm. You have brilliantly captured the essence of lying without having to lie. Or am I lying?
Hahaahahahahahahahahaha! ! ! ! The things I learn and the manner in which I learn them! ! ! ! I adore your wit- -just when I think I will doze off, you wake me up with a sly come back or two. Thank you for reading my stuff, my friend!
Poets are endowed with a great gift of imagination.... so they resort to their fancy and mix facts with fiction! Plato abandoned poets and lovers from his ideal republic, calling them mad men....! In a way aren't we a group of people with a streak of insanity? In fact, all artists are! Enjoyed your half hilarious and half serious write! A huge 10
We are a merry crew. With our imagination waltzing around and through and on top of cold hard facts, we might be thought a wee bit odd but really we are great instigators of progress! ! ! Thank you for your kind words and the 10, Valsa! ! !
Susan, I agree with you almost fully! Though we poets do not tell blunt lies always, we use hyperbole to excite and charm the readers. Naked and dull facts will fall flat on deaf ears!
We, then, are proud to be exaggerationists, stretchers-of-truth, and storytellers! ! ! I fell in love with his blue eyes - just doesn't cut it for us. We skip the middle man and fall into his blue eyes.! ! ! !
My goodness, a fact like that just reaches out and grabs us by our heartstrings and twirls us around the room in an ecstasy of glory. and leaves us in a state of happiness with nary a hint of allegory....a very good explanation of the lies of the poets. thank u dear Susan for clarifying all these. thank u. tony
I had a bit of fun with this, I must admit. I enjoy writing and reading and exploring words and how we use them and how they reveal who we are. Thank you Tony for reading and commenting!
Apparently the reply box doesn't function on this weirded out page that is unlike any poem page I have ever seen on PH before. It is formatted entirely different then, just in case you think you might deal with it...there is print overlaying the print under it. Is anyone else having this difficulty? ? ? Reply box still not working either.
Subhas- -I am still having a non-functional reply box so I must answer your kind thoughtst in the comment box. I am pleased that you enjoy my sardonic sense of humor- not everybody does! ! ! And thank you for all those starry-eyed 10's! ! ! ! ! !
A funny way of redefining poetic adventure. Thanks dear Susan for this lovely sharing. 10++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Subhas
Bharati Nayak - - Again I have no access to reply boxes and must use comment box. I love your words- prosaic prose.! ! ! ! You nailed it with two words! ! ! ! Now that is being the master of brevity! ! ! Thank you for reading and for your lively comment! ! !
Glen Kappy- - -I love your sense of humor- you made me bust out laughing and how COOL it is to meet someone who knows sarcasm w/o having to have it explained! ! ! One of these days I will write a very odious poem salted with all sorts of preposterous pieces of humor just for another knee-high to a grasshopper kind of feller! ! ! Thank you! ! ! !
Susan, I enjoy this poem.I have read it several times. It is about poetry.A real poet knows how difficult it is to put into words the feelings he feels- - -Yes, some feelings are so deep and indescribable.- - - - - - Poetry will be no poetry without those adjectives that add colors to words- - - otherwise it will be most prosaic prose. - - - - - -Written with a bit of humour, this is a brilliant write.
This is excellent, Susan, in the manner of Ogden Nash. I particularly like the sarcasm in the sentence that begins, My goodness, a fact like that... I would ask Jack Gilbert how much poetry he’d actually read—for haiku avoids adjectives and, much less, exaggeration. Then there’s the fact that everyday speech—the precursor to poetry— is salted and spiced with colorful metaphor and simile and hyperbole. —But you knew that probably since you were knee-high to a grasshopper. -Glen
That's the power of imagination and that is why any art is so fascinating. Really enjoyed reading this :)
It is good to hear you enjoyed your time spent reading this poem! ! ! I agree that imagination is a delight in all forms of art- -there are artists painting such novel and compelling work that it amazes me that they thought to do it! ! Thank you again, Bipasha
Susan, this is a great poem. You take us from lying...to lying. I take my cue from your last line (sans any contact with any vehicle!) . I think some of the greatest work, the most profound insights, the most valuable lessons...come when one is reclining. A 10.
Hahaaahahah... I have to confess that I never tried writing from a reclining position... though perhaps from a lying position :) Thank you for reading and commenting, my friend! And for the 10
Wow.... so well expressed, Susan. To encapsulate such a thought the way you did is not easily done. Here you did it with flare 10+++++++++
Oh, that is a relief to hear! I went through a period of time after posting this that I felt I had not written my ideas with sufficient clarity. Thank you so much for relieving my mind! ! ! And thank you for those starry-eyed 10's!
What make this more than fun here is it not just a writing from you Susan it something innate that you know deep inside you about something, the thought of that thing, and to discuss about it and now present is as more open but personal share. After all, all poetry somehow is related to us either you wrote this or they wrote that...its about expression of mind, lying or truth it just conceptual of poetry form...not the facts! thanks for honest write!
Hi Soul, you really got inside this poem and took a tour- -knocking on its wall, jumping up and down on its floors, peeking under the furniture, searching behind its pictures! ! ! Thank you for taking the time to delve into it and finding something for your efforts! ! ! Thank you for your comment, my friend.
Hey, Susan! Been a while. A notice brought me to this poem of yours which I never read and/or never commented on. Having just enjoyed it, here I am telling you that. Lie on! eh? Hoping you're well in all ways, Glen
