Hanging On The Wire Poem by Colin Ian Jeffery

Hanging On The Wire

(Trench warfare, France, World War One)

Tommy's hangs on barbed wire
Shot by a German sniper
Died in no-man's land bathed in moonlight
Cutting through the wire
Making way for dawn's bayonet charge.

Officer asked for volunteer
Bringing Tommy back to the trench
Best mate Joey went
Now, hanging beside Tommy on the wire
Shot by a German sniper.
