If Kerouac's haikus were 17 syllables, they would be less meaningful. Part of the beats' deal is that they were calling all of literary tradition into question. I'd be disappointed if he just followed the rules. I don't understand why we would even want to be form police for this kind of writing. Just let it be what it is, man.

I totally agree with mohammed! ! ! ! 7 syllables or of the modern age 17 words... Just because it's jack Kerouac's poem doesn't make haiku! ! !

mohammed, open your mind.the rain is tears....why kneel refers to neal cassady, and also to why kneel to a useless god who does nothing to alleviate suffering that is, if there is a god

It's an absolute nonsense in the name of haiku. A haiku contains 17 syllables while it has only 7. The structure is not correct. I'm surprised at the wit of people how it got 31 votes and also occupied a place in top 500 poems. It should be removed at once.

The American Haiku is not exactly the Japanese Haiku. The Japanese Haiku is strictly disciplined to seventeen syllables but since the language structure is different I don't think American Haikus (short three-line poems intended to be completely packed with Void of Whole) should worry about syllables because American speech is something again...bursting to pop. Above all, a Haiku must be very simple and free of all poetic trickery and make a little picture and yet be as airy and graceful as a Vivaldi Pastorella. Jack Kerouac
