POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
Note:
[1] "KIGO" are season words used in haiku. In orthodox Japanese haiku writing, each haiku should include a season word. These are words for human activities, natural phenomena and living creatures: each of these words is associated with one of the four seasons, according to traditional consensus. (The New Year Festival is thought of as a "fifth season, " so it has its own KIGO.)An unabridged dictionary of KIGO in Japanese runs to over 1500 pages. It is a repository of knowledge about the natural world and human customs, including lore about when plants flower and when birds migrate.
