Guru 8 - I Bow Down To Touch The Feet Of My Guru Poem by Geeta Radhakrishna Menon

Guru 8 - I Bow Down To Touch The Feet Of My Guru

Rating: 5.0

The greatness of a Guru
Is beautifully expressed
In this famed couplet of Saint Kabir.
"Guru Govind Dou khade Kaako Laagun Paayam,
Balihaari Guru Aapne Govind Diyo Bataay."

"Both Guru and God are standing before me!
I am in a dilemma!
Whose feet should I touch?
The Guru or the God? "
Of course, I know it for sure!
Says the Disciple with confidence.
I am convinced that
I should touch the feet of my Guru.
It is Guru who is showing me the path to God.
Without my Guru I do not know who God is!
Without my Guru I have no sense of direction.
Without my Guru I am in a state of darkness.
I know God only through the teachings of my Guru.
My Guru is my link to God and I need his blessings.
I bow down to touch the feet of my Guru!

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
In my poem Guru 6 - Why a Guru? Poet Rajnish Manga ji quoted theses lines of Kabir in his comment. Inspired by this couplet, i have interpreted the meaning through this poem. I sincerely hope it brings out the meaning in a proper way.

This couplet of Sant Kabir explores the idea of Guru. The idea of the Sant that it is Guru who introduced me to God and so Guru comes first, is a revelation. This couplet I had studied in the school. But, now that you have transliterated it so beautifully, I am able to fathom its profoundity, with more clarity. Thank you Geeta.

Among the SANT poets KABEER DAS has a prominent place. His teachings are abundant of Bhakti and philosophy. Thank you very much for quoting him for expressing your respect for the Guru. Guru deserves, certainly the first place than God for it is the Guru who teaches us about God. Your poem carries this message vividly

It signifies the status of a Guru who in a subtle way holds a higher place that God Himself because it is through the guidance of Guru, one can attain Him. Thanks for this wonderful explanation about the couplet in a very lucid and simple language and for the Notes, Dear Geeta ji. I don't know how I missed on this beautiful poem.

It is Guru who is showing me the path to God. (1) Without my Guru I do not know who God is! I know God only through the teachings of my Guru..... /..... There is hardly a student of Hindi literature who has not read it or is not familiar with this couplet of Sant Kabir.

Compelling exploration of how we need guidance through our understanding of God, each other and Guru. Very nice.

I am convinced that I should touch the feet of my Guru. It is Guru who is showing me the path to God. Without my Guru I do not know who God is! ........outstanding conceptualization. Really Guru alone can show the path to God. A brilliant poem on Guru has been hauntingly portrayed.10
