Guru 14 - The Incomparable Guru - Adi Sankaracharya Poem by Geeta Radhakrishna Menon

Guru 14 - The Incomparable Guru - Adi Sankaracharya

Rating: 5.0

Adi Sankaracharya,
Much acclaimed Philosopher,
Is respected and venerated,
As one of the greatest Gurus of India.

Born in Kalady in Kerala,
Sri Sankara's profound wisdom,
Established ‘Advaita' Vedanta
Through his brilliant commentaries
Of ‘Prasthana Traya' -
The Three great Scriptural works:
The Upanishads,
The Brahma Sutras, and
The Bhagavad Geeta.

Sri Sankara's ‘Vivekachudamani' in Sanskrit,
Occupies an essential place for his ardent followers.
A long dialogue between a Guru and his disciple,
On life, its meaning and its goals,
Is most beautifully penned
Flowing into five hundred and eighty verses.

A verse in ‘Vivekachudamani'
Points to the characteristics of a pure Guru.
‘A pure Guru is one who knows ‘Brahman'
And is continuously established in ‘Brahman'.
He is well versed in the Scriptures.
He remains free from lust and has no ulterior motives.
He is an ocean of love with a friendly, affable nature,
He is ready to impart knowledge to those who seek and trust him."

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
Adi Sankaracharya's treatises on philosophy and religion are so vast like an ocean. This poem of mine does not even touch the fringe of his numerous scholarly works.
As I am writing specifically on ‘Gurus', I am making it concise and precise. Also, lengthy discussion on the subject will not make it a poem. It will become a discourse or a debate.
Sri Sankara's each work will require a whole new Series. Reading and understanding Sri Sankara is not easy. Each time I read his work, I feel I am entering into a whole new ‘thesis' mode. The Gurus have to bless me in order to enter into such deep and mystical Indian Philosophy.

Thank you, Geeta ji, for telling the readers about Adi Sankaracharya and his' ‘Vivekachudaamani'- A long dialogue between a Guru and his disciple. The verses dealing with the characterstics of a Guru have also been explained with the sincerity of a true seeker of scriptural knowledge. The series is progressing well.
