a storm rages outside
sky, overcast with clouds
fearful sounds echo through
the mountain crannies

The poem stars with such a tempests that I did not see it become an exploration, into your own soul, and the memories left in your deposit are all bitter sweet. I know what it is like, trying to hold onto the happiness of lost moments only to watch them slip away like sand in your hands, and all that's left is the rot of that which cant be lost.
Beautifully Sad, yet beautifully human that these thoughts are a universal malady of all the good souls out there. Your spirit glows so evanescently through these words, the torture of your mind strikes like a lightning within these words you paint, your pain, and its a canvas that remains within the minds eye.
sitting in my dim lit room with all the windows shut unable to drown the emptiness afloat in irrepressible buoyancy I glance over the balance sheet of my life..............so touching with a great theme. It is a beautiful philosophical poem with heartrending depiction. Thanks for sharing.10
Sometimes I feel what makes us humans is that we have memories - good and bad both. I usually feel something between scared and excited when there are storms. But almost all the times once it is over, I begin to have these moments when I wonder about certain parts of my life. Reminiscence is quite the phantom that haunts us. A beautiful poem ma'am. Thanks for sharing.
You are absolutely right, Red Soul! Once memories are lost, life would take a different turn! It will become so vapid! Memories can be phantoms that haunt us and sometimes delight and tickle us! Thank you so much for your kind comment!
I love the powerful imagery of your first stanza, especially the bats shrieking. bitter memories keep returning. A beautiful poem of deep sadness.
Life becomes interesting only if sweet memories are recalled. Bitter memories will shatter life toward doom of total despair. Your poem provides the caution for all.
You are absolutely right Tirupathi sir! However we cannot prevent sour memories from coming to the fore, sometimes! Thank you!
This is heartbreaking but so close to reality. For some reason good memories are deleted faster from memories than the bad ones. I think once we have a clean slate that is a joyful living. So good to read your new poems. Thankyou so much again for leaving your encouraging note on my little brag poem! I have to start working upon your advice soon.
You are absolutely right Savita.......! We forget to remember and relish sweet experiences..... unfortunately sad ones thrust themselves up to mind's surface! Thank you!
I have heard thunderstorms elate people. They do make me dance. I remember Joseph Vyttila saying in one of his Malayalam stories: Oh, ye, who sit in your rooms with doors and windows shut when lightning streaks the skies and thunder blasts, you are forgetting to live. Come on Valsa-ji, open your windows and doors and welcome the furious nature, life would be sweeter. All said and done, your poem is wonderfully crafted and deserves several 10s. (10)
Yes, I leave my windows open for rejuvenating whiffs of breeze to enter! Thank you Rajendran ji for your inspirational comment!
a very sorrowful write full of darkness and gloom? ....................wonderfully written Valsa
Thank you so much Tom for visiting my page and making such a beautiful comment!
This goes on my fav list with so many of its brothers and sisters and there are not enough 10's on this earth to give it the rating it so richly deserves. This is Literature. I toured the poem again and beneath that physical storm I think there is a spiritual storm of the heart and the Good Lord knows there are many storms in everyone's life. The only way to avoid the pain is to not care, not love, and that is not what poets like you can do. Love and prayers, dear friend.
When dressed up in a bride's finery, even an ordinary girl will look like a charming princess! This has happened to my poem. When it is evaluated by Susan, it has acquired an extra ordinary beauty and profoundness. You have also done me honor by sending this to your favorite poem list! Thanks a lot for your time to pen such wonderful words!
Now to address the rest of this poem- -I like the way you began with the storm raging outside your home like it is bent on destroying all life in its vicinity and then you take us into your home and then your heart and we watch you - -glance over the balance sheet / of my life. I don't believe I have ever seen a better metaphor for this activity.. And that closing- - my beautiful Valsa in pain, awash in bitter memories. Hurts my heart to think that, my dear.
True, I have been in pain and was trying to empty my mind off all the frustration and sense of loss, I have been feeling at the moment! When we feel something intensely and deeply, the poem will also have its natural effect! Thanks for your wishes and prayers..... Susan!
Now you know darn well that this image would grab me- all sweet memories gone / shaking their mane / like horses galloping away. Beautiful, powerful, and very very true image- that is what horses do- they shake their manes before whirling on their hind legs and racing off, carrying their tails furled like banners! ! ! Okay, now that I have raved on and on about horses I will now comment on the rest of this awesome poem.
As a person closely associated with equestrian life, you could enjoy the horse image better! I am glad!
Wow! ...What a powerful, spontaneous poem filled with amazing poetic beauty and emotions, diction and imagery. This is what poetry is! Wonderfully composed!
Thanks a lot Mihaela! Your highly appreciative words mean so much to me!
all sweet memories gone shaking their mane like horses galloping away bitter memories only bitter memories remain! ....sometimes this happens...but this weak emotional outburst also will change and will be taken over by sweet memories again....as usual your writing style enchants Valsa...thank you and wish you all the best
Thanks a lot for your appreciation of my poem, Indira madam! As you say, bitter memories in course of time will pave way to sweet memories! Otherwise life cannot go on!
This is such a heart-wrenching poem. Valsa, I feel your pain. And it really saddens me. Because your poems, support and encouragement have brought nothing but happy memories to me. You are one of the poets who truly inspires me! And for this, I have a grateful heart!
Most of the time I write inspirational poems. But when I wrote this, I was still in the shock of my sister's death! I really enjoyed life with all my siblings.... suddenly my sister staying close to me took leave of us! Happy to know I have been a source of inspiration to you, Richard!
everything around presages an impending doom.... all sweet memories gone.... only bitter memories remain! The poem has succeeded in creating a very moving picture of life. At some or the other point of time we all are besieged by such debilitating impulses. Very touching.
Yes, in everyone's life, there are such dark moments! Thanks a lot for your beautiful comment Rajnish sir!
I believe the wings of your imagination will keep on flying leaving aside what you call ‘bitterness’ and they will catch up sweet memories on the back of fast racing horses ultimately assuring you peace and happiness! A beautiful poem!
I glance over the balance sheet of my life! I feel this piece of work has taken it’s birth in pensive mood! All sweet memories have travelled like galloping horses! The last two lines which emphasize bitterness as the remainder of rest of life is not the true reflection not it may come true!
You are right Dillip! This poem took its birth in one of my most pensive moods! Thank you for your detailed comment as ever!
Its sad, but I have come to realize that its those people who reflect within themselves sadness and anxiety are themselves great people. For only great people are able to encounter pain. Your Balance Sheet Has a net positive, yours is an asset of humanity, and this poem is the revenue of great worth.
