Green Effect Poem by Vihanga Perera

Green Effect

It is almost as if I felt that that hollowness was
Too empty to bear; that, our connection failed
Permanently; that, I had given myself too soon.
I sat where I sat against a pathless silence
And later, with a sigh, I quit the room.

What was left of the pouch was all that was left
And later, I learnt, going through my phone,
I had said many things ungallant to a woman
Who wouldn't even matter the day the worlds end:
Who replies -without dope -what with dope you send.

Pull yourself together, after being hurt:
Turn up on your back so that the ceiling
Flutters on your face. You watch the timbers
Where they eat into each other's flesh and you
Watch them eat days into days into days.

I know by tomorrow I will be alright. That
Tomorrow I will roll down to pick up my clothes.
The colour drains, the system shakes as a lily shakes
To shed soft drops of dew down the husk of a beetle
On whom clumsy feelers grew.
