Goodbye Old Friend Poem by Tony Sandy

Goodbye Old Friend

Let me slip quietly away
Into the dark, enfolding night,
That black absorbing opulence
Wherein none returns.
Let me not burden you with
My dying breath
Or crush you with hopeless tears.

The wind calls my name
And tells me that I am no longer here,
No longer home.
Eternity says that these weary bones,
Long for weariness no more.
The loyalty to stay
Holds sway
But love wants my embrace
And I am loathe to disobey.
