Perhaps to these eyes accustomed to seeing stories unfold in television shows and theater and Broadway stage or in a neverending supply of books, this story seems overlong and a bit sentimental. Yet if we would imagine ourselves back in her time, we would cherish the written word, feast on a new story, and read it over and over by firelight and count ourselves entertained. I found myself enjoying many parts of this tale just as people 200 years ago did.
