The poem itself has rather stirring imagery. However, the freedom of one people meant the enslavement and destruction of those who were originally here and those who were imported forcefully to these shores. Recognition of the terrorism of slave hunters, Indian hunters and the Ku Klux Klan and its co-existence with 'freedom' is imperative if a more accurate portrait of this nation is to be seen. The peace that we all seek will come when these truths are faced, embraced and then blown away like so much chaff.
