Gift Of The Walnut Poem by Kim Barney

Gift Of The Walnut

Rating: 5.0

I was quite lost and all alone,
in forest thick and deep,
exhausted, cold, and starving, too,
and wishing I could sleep.

I said a prayer and asked God for
a morsel I could eat,
when suddenly a small crow dropped
a walnut at my feet!

I never have been fond of crows;
just thought they were no good.
I never thought I'd see the day
when one would bring me food.

A walnut's thirteen calories
don't seem like a big deal,
but something you must realize
is how that made me feel.

I knew that God had heard my prayer,
was watching over me,
and if I ask Him for His help,
then He will hear my plea.

In less than fifteen minutes more,
I found a logging road
and followed it out through the woods
until a village showed.

To make a longer story short,
some parts I've had to cut.
I won't forget that little crow
---and I still have that nut!

I am reminded that a saw is a story. To cut it while on a logging road...now that is genius. Brilliant verse, Kim.
