Walking by
My head turns in a double-take
& then I pause
I knew her once before
One time
Stayed with me for years
If I was a gambling man
Would I brave one final throw
Of a dice
At destiny I do not know?
Would I throw
A branch of steel
Between the spokes
Of my front wheel
& go for broke?
I'd flip the bike
& turn the tables
Fooling myself
So I'd be able
To find another way
To fall head over heels
I considered reaching out
Through bitterness
& sharp winter air
To see if I could feel anything
At least I'd know
If anything was there
The longer I look back
The more I count my flaws
I have to walk away
With one more double-take
I turn around & pause -
There's no one to be seen
The only ghost was mine
Destiny calls elsewhere
I'll walk with it in time
