Gentle Is The Night Poem by Gabriel Mc Keown

Gentle Is The Night

Gentle is the night
Sky hangs low,
Heat has come
Into the valley.
I observe below.

Sounds of birds
Calling from the forest.
Squirrels and rabbits
Scamper back and forth
In among the grey.
Knowing time is short,
Before end of day.

We hold our breaths
Looking for rain,
To water trees and flowers
Of this vast domain.
Keeping plants alive
Roots stems,
Berries and nuts
Needed for creatures,
Living here.

Faint sunlight
Upon the forest glade
Betweenfluctuating
Shadowsof the night,
Lavender and hawthorn
Foxglove woodbine
Dog rose andstrawberry
Are alight, visited by
Moths and butterflies.

I watch them in
The gatheringdusk,
Hovering and flying
Like tiny birds in flight,
Taking well chosen line
Visiting nectar and pollen
Offlowers nearby.

Gentle is the night,
Like a tawdry curtain,
Coming down
Slowly and silently,
To enfold trees
And flowers
In its flimsy mesh.

Birds and animals crave
Darkened shadows
In faltering light,
Silence pervades,
As the day wains.
