Fortunately I left a message to myself that I wanted to give you a 10 on this poem but the whatchacallit was down, MIA, or vacationing off the Riviera..... so I ran across [tripped actually] over my to-do-note today SO I am now giving you a 10 if the stupid server thingee is up and doing what it ought to do!
Did the same this morning with one of your fellow Americans. Darn good poem it was too. Amended my error! I think sometimes PH takes us back to Home Page by mistake. I must remember to put more water in my whisky in future!
Is it gamit not gambit or a typo? My wife and I have a shared bank account. Would that make her a checkmate?
Gambit. It's that typist again. Will correct, thanks. Love the checkmate quip! Yes. We don't but I try to keep her in Check.
I keep getting sent to a silly page that goes nowhere today. I can only reach people on my favourites lists and those I've exchanged messages with. Just a thought. How about PH and a Fool's mate! mmmm.
You had to, didn't you? A Czech mate.! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! Your sense of humor cracks me up. This poem, is very good as a stand-up serious poem - - my Father and Uncle and brother played chess against each other and it was NEVER a GAME- -it was blood-and-guts, destroy the opposing forces by a steel hand. I loved how you tied this game of chess to history..... do you realize you could teach history this way- - and I bet it would stick to the student's bones as regular history teachings do not! ! ! ! A 10! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! !
My brother was a real Roundhead of the game. It was Oliver Cromwell reborn when he took to the board. He went into International Competitions now and again. Me? I was a Cavalier. Saw myself as Prince Rupert... Charge... charge... all out attack.. far too impatient. Worked against most but not often against my brother. Well, the roundheads won in the end! Not really my game. I love cards myself.. the unpredictable... I beat the wife (not literally) 4-1 yesterday but she smashed me 4-0 today! BOO! I see what you mean about history. Wonder why they call castles, Rooks? And what about those bishops charging around on the battlefield. Mind you, William the Conquerer's half brother, Odo, was a bishop and very warlike. I'll do some reearch and try and work out a few more angles! Tom
Yes it was handed over to Catholic Bavaria by the Spanish, I think, then after 1648 split between Fredericks eldest son Charles and Bavaria..
Yes, Kevin, that's sounds correct. I think James V1 and our James 1 was expected to support him but wouldn't oppose the Hapsburgs. One of the flashpoints for the 30 years' War.
Yes enjoyed this..I once visited the battlefield the White Mountain or Bila Hora back in 1990 not long after the revolution in 1989. The locals gave us lots of strange looks and shrugs of the shoulder, it was all farmland but there is a small monument to the defeat. Many thanks.
I stayed at the Karoline Uni in Prague for a few weeks and also visited the Tatra mountains. But I didn't visit the battlefield. This was just before the Dubcek era and things were quite relaxed. Loved Prague and found the people very friendly. Frederick lost his Palatinate too and I think mainly lived in Den Haag and later in the Rhineland. Was it Mainz? My brother is the chess player, representing Devon, Lancs and later Cumbria. Me, much too impatient, I'm afraid! Tom
Tom, I love the poem, especially the Czech Mate pun. I love the game of chess (I have 16 chess poems and about that many chess sets and boards) , and I also love puns. Thanks for posting this!
You and my brother would get on famously. He's a chess fanatic and has played board one for three different English Counties and taken part in the odd International event. I try to avoid playing him as I usually get slaughtered. Mind you he can't beat me at table tennis! You'll have to let me know the titles of some of your Chess poems and I'll look them up.
The chess poems can all be found together under the titles Chess Poem 1, Chess Poem 2, etc.
