Fruitseller Poem by BASAB CHAUDHURI

Fruitseller

A new realization everyday -
doesn't matter whether it is large or small,
as long as it enriches mind
and leaves a lasting impression.

This fruitseller in the market
not a very successful one
but composed, quiet, integrated.

He doesn't talk much,
doesn't argue,
doesn't negotiate on price,
he sells fruits with soft hands,
takes money, gives changes,
I find a distant, somewhat detached politeness in him,
not garrulous, not obstinate,
he holds himself marvellously.

Has he read Upanishads?
I haven't asked him.
Yet I feel, he has got a character
that leaves an impression -
silent, sober, detached, performing.
