I think the start of any religion was done with a good intention. But it could change us into monsters, the history proved it. Maybe all we need is to keep a good ballance... Forgiveness can be understood in different ways. I see it as a tool for keeping one's loving heart. If we wouldn't find forgiveness in one heart we could also find no trace of love...But as a system forgiveness shall be given with the same amount with fairness.Quite difficult because many of us may have fairness measured in a different scale.
