Forever is a long, long, time, my dear,
so don't make promises that you can't keep,
but love me just as long as you are here;
I want to feel your presence as I sleep.

To get into someone else's shoes and write from their perspective is something very few writers can do. Usually it's hard to keep oneself away from our writings but the way you have negated yourself totally and put forward a woman's perspective is simply sublime.5 stars!

Unfortuantely I've heard (at least in novels) the ending before. : ( But, they, all 3, may be better off if he leaves.

'I'll take as much as I can get of you.' Are you sure she didn't say 'out of you'? ? ? Really, that's the way my mind read it at first. I might be thinking of wife # 1. ;)

Wow awesome sad poem on behalf of the woman who apprehends and fears her guy will leave her eventually sooner or later. Sad and soulful, bittersweet. Shouldn't be like that. Though in real life women don't accept it so leniently unless they're also looking for freedom from him to move on. Kudos!

Thank you for the comment. You have astutely read between the lines. Perhaps she is giving him his freedom because she doesn't want him around anymore? It could be interpreted that way. Thanks again.

I like it, very thoughtful, and thought provoking. I like that it is from a woman perspective, rather reminds me of John Prine's incredible song: 'Angel From Montgomery'.

Smoky, thank you so much for the comment. This poem was posted for TEN DAYS without getting any comments, and you are the first to do so. This website has changed so much. In the old days it would have got many comments the first day.
