For The Betterment Of Something Poem by Mark Heathcote

For The Betterment Of Something

Let me unbridle myself entirely.
And break free from these chains and bonds.
Let me lean on my wings and fly westerly.
On a breeze, and let my heart abscond—

And leave the past and find true meaning.
Let me disperse like a fog, a mist.
and discover a rainbow still beaming
let me fall in love and with my heart enlist

In all these social galas where I might shine
let the relics of the past burn charcoal
for I am a kaleidoscope, a picture divine.
If I change, I do it for the betterment of something,
not to startle you.

~

I might marionette-like a fine red wine.
Take on social responsibilities and more civic duties.
Like I mean to be someone and be less byzantine
Cut through the bureaucracy of these awful congruities.

I might save the planet or even help somebody.
I might become more public-spirited.
And be the voice of hope instead of perfunctory
And ring the changes no matter how difficult.
