A fog can hide many things from a memory to a thought to a face once longed for to Stand in a fog by the ocean and turn around to see nothing but hear the distant shore.....nice poetic expression with nice theme. A beautiful philosophical poem so nicely executed and amazingly shared.10

Sometimes in a fog; we can discern what we want to see better for there are no other distractions. After a foggy spell, we are usually able to see things better. Thanks Mj

Thank you so much, Loke. I do like the idea of the fog acting to focus the senses....Thanks again.

Bri, It may be that I am always in a fog! ! That 'to' at the end of the line may not be a preposition...If it is, say, part of an infinitive that may really impact the reading of the poem.

fog lies in the depths of some strong memories for me, going back through many decades, memories never written out; 'Fog Bound' is the only title presently springing to mind; fog masks depth denying the clarity of surface appearances

Thanks, Terry. You just said something interesting, fascinating. Some of the strongest memories long-past of events that I can recall are tied to foggy days. I have no idea why.

I think it is because the effect is a profoundly different landscape and the way people and vehicles etc appear disapper suddenly, slipping in and out of reality; sound clarity contracts, wild animals seem to often stick around and stare instead of taking to flight. Fog reshapes the world momentarily for a short duration, it is like an earthquake shaking a solid ground reality, the rules of reality change.

Reading this poem, I feel 'fog' stands for more than the misty screen seen in Nature! We need fog.... a smoke screen to hide our shortcomings or sense of shame or guilt... an escape mechanism, may be a camouflage! Everything cannot be exposed to bright light! A screen sometimes saves as a savior... something like a barricade that prevents the enemies from advancing! Unfortunately it can act also as an agent of segregation! However fog puts a veil on the truth or reality! Enjoyed this poem of deeper layers of meaning! I couldn't reach at your page to post the comment, though I tried several times!

A very interesting way to speak about the physical way we experience fog. The psychological fog also is so well expressed. Fog and time and the memories of what the past made of our experiences is also evoked in this poem. I had a question though, are you leaving us to find out if our fogs need to be healed by us, should be done away with etc, etc. I felt like I needed to hear your voice not while I am lost in my own fog because the poem challenges me to think deeply about the past, the present and what I can make of these as I move on, in, and about life. Thanks for writing this poem. It is thought provoking and leaves me wanting discussion.

Thank you so much, Sarah. I really appreciate your insights. When I was writing this poem, I was actually looking out a window and into a fog so thick that I couldn't see anything past maybe a meter or so. What came to mind was the idea that a fog could actually be a solid physical barrier to the outside world. And from there, the idea of how many barriers separate us from the outside. There is teh psychological 'I' kept in check by teh body; the whole shielded by the house or apartment or dwelling. There are communities that shield and protect the individual. How these barriers or layers act is in part up to each individual. They may serve to isolate and constrain, or they may serve to protect and preserve. I think each individual's circumstances may come to dictate whether the fog needs to be accepted or whether it must be opposed.

We do need our fog- -if we didn't have its muffling deadening sense to wrap around our sins and embarrassments we would be hard pressed to feel those awesome moments in which our hearts swell with intense joy. Personally I wish I behaved better so I don't need so darn much fog! Fascinating write- -one which I want to read again and again and reflect upon.

Thanks, Bri...I came across the idea for this one when I started to notice how many metaphors for various psychological/emotional states we have that would disappear if we had no weather...
