Floating Down The River Styx Poem by Belle Wassermeister

Floating Down The River Styx

Rating: 5.0

Found myself floating
down the River Styx
instead of crossing
as I should have done.

I saw Bri Edwards
on the other side.
Yesterday he said
he would wait for me.

He'll wait a long time,
I suppose, if I
keep going downstream
instead of across.

Charon was all slumped
over the tiller.
Whether dead or drunk,
no way I could tell.

Curse all my bad luck!
Someone had told me
to go to Hades
and I can't make it.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
Bri Edwards had mentioned the River Styx in a private message. I had heard of it before but didn't really know what it was, so I turned to Google. According to Greek mythology, The River Styx is the main underworld river that the ferryman Charon would take the souls of the dead across into Hades. The Underworld in Greek mythology was where the souls of the dead resided, and the River Styx separated the dead in the Underworld from the living on the other side. This is syllabic verse, with exactly five syllables in every line.

Belle, I really love this poem. Very well thought out and so very creative. Very witty in adding the funny Bri Edwards. And your last stanza is a classic in shedding new light on that angry term.
