This poem is virtually a primer on how to write poetry by being alert, that is, a sustained effort at being alert to the world around you, sensitive to all of its manifestations, finding the right words to articulate the wonder of it. This can be an exhausting endeavor because you're all of your resources - intellect, feeling, senses - to pull everything together into that sense of wholeness which is also our mental health. After a half day of such concentrated poetic reverie, you will need the restorative virtues of sleep! !
