Can I speak to you on this lonesome night
Before cold darkness robs you of your sight
Maybe just a word or two
Before you turn so damn blue
Can we just talk
Before lost walk
Joke a little bit
Before your last fit
Can I share in your pain
Before it starts to rain
Just start talking to me
And help me to now see
Can you please communicate
About your mind's tragic state
Empathize with my sound friendship
Steer you away from this trip
Though I've never 'threatened' nor 'attempted' suicide, I've had personal experiences of 'mental health' arrest TWICE 25-30 years ago, accompanied by 'forced' trips to emergency rooms. Interesting! ! ! ! bri : )
Bri, I very much appreciate your sincere honesty. And that it all had worked out for you. And that you're here to share both your wit, and your profundity, through your poetry.
I DISAGREE with Kim (previous comment) saying 'Suicide is never the answer'. It, if successful, could well be the 'answer' to a problem, and I will/would consider it for myself. But I believe one should have 'good counseling backup' to help any person considering suicide.
2) Even excellent counselling can sometimes not prevent someone from committing suicide. But it should ALWAYS be there for that very vulnerable person.
As a Christian, I believe that committing suicide is a violation of God's Law. However, I believe that in some circumstances euthanasia is justifiable.
I'd use sympathize instead of empathize unless YOU also had had depression and thoughts of suicide. I'll concede that he probably was depressed. But there is NO mention of drugs or alcohol in poem.
As a former social worker, I very well know the difference between the two words. Also, i am empathizing with him, but in that line, I am asking him to empathize with the 'sound' foundation of our long-term friendship.
I don't 'get' the last two lines. I don't know how valuable the use of 'sound' is here, and I don't think 'empathize' is used correctly unless YOU, Richard, have been in your friends condition at one time.
This poem has not been translated into any other language yet.
I would like to translate this poem
Just mentioning to the 'wrong people' my thought of possibly trying suicide one day gave me some INTERESTING EXPERIENCES with the legal and health systems in Rochester, New York! ! bri ;)
If you've written any poems about those experiences, I would love to read them. In closing, I'm very grateful to you for having written such an in-depth commentary.
