It's a very sad story of a man who because he had shut himself off drink and his companions seemed to have screwed down the hatches on his life too. I'm not much of a drinker but I can understand his inner despair and his growing isolation. This is a very thought-provoking poem. Okay, it's a very good poem and I'm going to stick it with my favourites.
